Common Foot Conditions

Glossary of commonly occurring foot problems, and information on which conditions may be possible to correct through the use of DoctorInsole products.

Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles Tendinitis

This condition is identified by an inflammation of the tendon in the back of the heel. It is typically caused by abnormal walking patterns. Achilles Tendinitis can be treated by orthotics, physical therapy and/or surgical repair (if necessary) by a trusted medical professional.

Ankle Sprains

Ankle Sprains

This is a common condition in which the foot is turned in an abnormal way, most commonly arising from walking on uneven surfaces, wearing high heels/ill fitting shoes and/or sports-related injuries. When pursuing treatment for ankle sprains, it is very important to not only evaluate the bones via X-ray, but also get an MRI to rule out potential ligament tears, which can cause permanent damage. Ankle sprains can be treated by orthotics, physical therapy and/or surgical repair (if necessary) by a trusted medical professional.

Bunions

Bunions (Hallux Valgus)

This is a common genetic condition exacerbated by the way an individual walks and/or stands in shoes. When Bunions are present, the joint in the foot does not move properly and can cause the cartilage to break off causing discomfort. Bunions can be treated by orthotics, physical therapy and/or surgical repair (if necessary) by a trusted medical professional.

Freiberg's Disease

Freiberg's Disease

This is a condition in which the bone behind the second toe (second metatarsal) loses blood supply and often resulting in pain. The primary suggested treatment for Freiberg's disease is orthotics in an effort to reduce the pressure on the metatarsal. If orthotics do not entirely resolve the condition, surgery may be necessary.

Foot Numbness

Foot Numbness

This is a condition caused by the compression of the nerve inside the ankle and typically results in numbness and/or discomfort in the foot. Foot numbness can be caused by numerous things, including the mechanics of the patient’s foot or even systemic diseases like HIV or diabetes. It is recommended to consult with a medical professional who can perform a nerve test in order to determine the true origin of the nerve damage. Provided that it is in fact specifically limited to the feet, and it is mechanical, orthotics typically resolve this condition.

Hammertoes

Hammertoes

This is a condition typically identified by the appearance of curled and/or contracted toes. This is a genetic condition exacerbated by the way an individual walks and/or stands. This condition can be treated first by orthotics and if not corrected, surgery may be necessary to straighten the toes.

Lower Back Pain

Lower Back Pain

This is a condition that can have many contributing factors. Often this can be caused by a leg length discrepancy in which one leg proves to be longer than the other, which is typically either a birth defect and/or an issue caused in early childhood development. Lower back pain can often be treated by orthotics and/or physical therapy by a trusted medical professional.

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia

This is a generic term for pain felt in the front of the foot. This is often caused by wearing high heels/ill fitting shoes and/or abnormal walking patterns. Metataralgia pain can often be treated by properly fitting orthotics.

Neuroma

Neuroma

This is a condition in which the nerve between your toes feels numb due to pressure or abnormal walking patterns. Neuroma can be treated by orthotics, the injection of cortisone, and/or surgery by a trusted medical professional to facilitate the decompression or release of pressure from the nerve.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis

This is a very common condition in which the ligament that supports the arch of the foot becomes inflamed. This is usually caused by factors including, but not limited to, the way an individual walks, body weight, and use of the wrong type of shoe. Plantar fasciitis can be treated with orthotics, injections of cortisone, physical therapy and/or a surgical release of the ligament by a trusted medical professional.

Posterior Tibial Weakness

Posterior Tibial Weakness

This is a condition in which the tendon in the ankle is weak and therefore cannot hold up the arch resulting in the development of a pronatory (or flat) foot. Posterior tibial weakness can be treated by orthotics, physical therapy and/or surgical repair (if necessary) by a trusted medical professional.

Shin Splints

Shin Splints

This is a condition typically identified by pain in the front of the calf muscle. Shin splints are typically caused by abnormal walking and/or movement. This condition can be treated by orthotics and/or surgical repair (if necessary) by a trusted medical professional.
